PouchThe light of the city was enough to nearly pollute the sky. Stars faded to the background of floating lanterns and fireworks. Bursts of light poured into otherwise dark alleys. The wind mage shielded his eyes from the explosions, no shadow cast along the wall behind him. But out of the corner of his eye, he saw it. A smear of blood in the crevasse of a wall.
He knelt down beside it. Hands running along the jagged edges. His gloved hand dipped into the red ink.
"Blood," he reaffirmed, pulling his hand back and smushing the liquid between his thumb and forefinger. It was undeniable. He could smell it from even further back. The magic that was swimming in the life-giving substance.
He scanned the area but there was nothing. No more smears, not even a wandering soul. At least not for the moment. With a sigh, he stood up and wiped the blood away with a small gust of concentrated wind. "At least I know you've been here. And recently at that." He strolled down the rest of the alley, his collar pulled high and snug around his neck. Little bits of blood residue still clung to the tips of his fingers, but it was pushed to the side of his mind as he came upon the main street.
Just as his final step would have taken him back into the populace a gleam cascaded in the dark stairwell. It seemed to unfold into a lavish open doorway with the faint hint of people and beasts roaming the other side of it. It was distorted though, like looking through a fish bowl.
