Mikajia
Another odd letter from Godfrey. Except this time all it said was to meet him at his shop, then listed the time he was supposed to show up. He stopped getting surprised or suspicious of the man’s actions after the last job he’d taken from the man. He wondered if this job would have anything to do with the scroll he’d stolen from the bandits; the contents of the scroll were apparently very shocking and disturbing, considering how dramatically the blacksmith’s demeanor changed after reading only a small portion of the scroll. It was like watching the life drain from the man’s features as he read from it.

Mikajia could only guess at the item’s contents seeing as he had never once read it. Godfrey told him it was supposed to give instruction on how to craft an ancient and very powerful blade; muttering ‘The price’ a number of times, refusing to divulge what he had read to Mikajia, and instead sending him on his way with the payment. The question had been circling through his mind over and over, wondering what exactly had caused such a reaction in the man. What price could this item possibly require that would elicit such a response?

If this next job for the blacksmith was what he thought it would be, he figured he would find out soon enough. Mikajia gathered his belongings, then left his loft, quickly making way for the blacksmith’s shop. When he reached the shop, Mikajia could tell instantly that something wasn’t right with Godfrey. The way he was acting; his expressions, his movements, even his speech pattern, it was all very different from how Mikajia had come to know and recognize in the man. From the moment Mikajia walked into the shop, till he left, Godfrey never once even looked at Mikajia.

Mikajia
Instead of getting angry or demanding an answer, he simply accepted the letter given to him as some sort of transaction from the blacksmith. The man was acting almost like he didn’t really know Mikajia, like he was nothing more than a simple customer. But considering he’d received a letter previously that was asking him to show up at his shop at this time, Mikajia knew better than to cause a scene. Clearly Godfrey had his reasons for putting on this charade, and he felt it was definitely in his best interest to play along, at least for the time being.

Mikajia accepted the letter with a thanks then departed the shop without saying another word to the man. And once he had walked roughly a block from the store, he felt it was safe enough to open the letter and read it. There was a simple description about a man named Wayland Ferron. He was apparently a well-known blacksmith, like Godfrey. Unfortunately however, he was beginning to gain more momentum and business than Godfrey, and his skill as a blacksmith was beginning to be questioned. Because Godfrey refused to be known as second best in town, he wanted the man dealt with, but preferred Mikajia make it look as much like an accident as possible.

Seeing as it wasn’t exactly a secret that Godfrey despised being considered second best to Wayland, the man’s untimely death would almost undoubtedly be traced back to Godfrey, unless it could clearly be declared an accident. Also within the letter, he was given a very detailed list of places Wayland Ferron frequented, and the times he would typically be found at each one. Each of these times could work for Mikajia to use to complete his job, however it was suggested that he do the deed at Wayland’s house, as that would likely arouse the least amount of suspicion.

Mikajia
The last item in the envelop was a small picture of Wayland Ferron. Mikajia studied the picture for a few minutes, making sure he could easily recollect the man’s features. He then spent another few minutes going over the letter once more and the list of opportunities for him to assassinate the man. It didn’t take him too long to decide to go with the suggested location, Wayland’s house. The house provided the best opportunity all around, and not just because it shed the least amount of suspicion on Godfrey.

The biggest benefit would come from the fact that he could very easily make the man’s death appear as a genuine accident. All it took was a small bit of preparation. Also, the fact that Wayland Ferron was also an elderly man, played to his benefit as well. So, well before the man ever made it back home for the day, Mikajia paid his house a little visit. He lived in a fairly secluded part of town, not many other houses around, which meant few possible prying eyes to watch him as he approached and entered the old man’s house.

Mikajia wandered through the man’s house, looking for the perfect way to set up an accidental death. It didn’t take him too long to settle on the perfect method. He wandered back into the man’s kitchen, surveying his kitchen appliances, his eyes settling on the stove. It was a gas stove, which meant…He went and looked behind it and quickly located the tube he was searching for. All it would take would be the tiniest of tears in that tube, and the man’s house would begin filling up with natural gas. The best part about natural gas? It was almost entirely undetectable through smell. So Wayland would be completely unaware.

Mikajia
Mikajia’s search through the man’s house also told him that the man smoked, which meant all he would need to do was set it up so that when the man lit up, it would be the last thing he ever did. As it was now, Wayland would be coming home in roughly three hours, plenty of time for the house to fill with the deadly gas. But even natural gas would be noticeable if it became too concentrated. So Mikajia made the smallest incision possible into the tube, then pulled the tube taught, so the hole couldn’t close on itself. The hole was large enough to allow the gas to begin escaping into the room, but small enough to keep the entire house from being overly flooded with gas and alerting Wayland as soon as he opened the door when he got home.

With the gas being released into the house, Mikajia let himself out, making sure to lock the door back up behind him. He made his way up to a decent vantage point; a nearby hill surrounded by dense trees would be the perfect vantage point for him to watch and make sure his plan went as expected. Plus, the hill was far enough away that he wouldn’t need to worry about being hit by any waves from the explosion. If his guess was right, the explosion that this would cause would likely end up destroying a couple of the nearby houses. Which, of course, meant that any people inside those houses would also likely die. That or if they were lucky, or unlucky depending on your outlook, they might survive, but would undoubtedly possess lasting damage from it.

Though Wayland was the only target, Mikajia knew that if there were any others caught up in this mess, there would be even less chance of it being connected to Godfrey. After all, his beef was with Wayland, and Godfrey had never been known to be aggressive towards his customers. What possible reason would the man have for involving completely innocent bystanders in his rivalry with Wayland?

Mikajia
For the next few hours, Mikajia just watched the house, waiting for Wayland to come home. Finally he saw the man approaching his house from down the street. He was alone and carrying a couple bags; grocery bags from what Mikajia could tell. A few minutes later, the man was opening his door and entering his house. He watched as some of the lights were turned on throughout the house, the man apparently getting changed and readying his dinner.

The next thing he knew, roughly ten minutes from the moment Wayland Ferron entered his house, it was gone in a flash. Even from his distance, his ears were ringing from the explosion. He dug his fingers into his ears, his eyes squinting as he tried to rid them of the loud ringing. It took a few moments, but eventually his hearing began to come back. A scene of absolute chaos sprawled out on the streets below him. Wayland’s house, as well as the two closest houses, were completely destroyed. Only the foundations and a few bricks remained. His brows shot up in surprise. He honestly thought he’d made sure the leak would be small enough that only Wayland’s house would be completely destroyed. But oh well.

With the deed taken care of, Mikajia made his way back to the blacksmith’s shop. The man’s behavior was mostly back to normal at this point when Mikajia showed back up at his shop to inform him of his success. He was pleased to hear that he was able to make it look like a complete accident, but did appear genuinely sad that the man actually had to die. It made no difference to Mikajia. He simply nodded as he accepted his payment then left.
