Only a few days had passed since he had last seen the doctor and tested out his experimental drug. He definitely had to say it was one of the strangest experiences of his life, and he wasn’t to keen on ever trying it again. It wouldn’t have been nearly as terrifying to him if he could have used his magic. Yeah, he still had his experience with martial arts to give him a small physical advantage over a normal person, but that beast would obviously take more skill than he possessed, if he were to ever actually encounter something like it in real life.

He had been simply wandering the streets when a man approached him with a simple letter, stating that it was from Dr. Mabuz. He took the letter without saying anything and then read it. Mikajia took a deep breath then sighed. Apparently, the man was wanting to test out the drug, he now called White Claudia, after making a few adjustments. He would need another willing volunteer to participate, and was wondering if he would be willing to do so again. Of course he would be paid well for his efforts, as was usual.

If nothing else, he could at least count on the fact that the doctor was a man of science, he thought. He doubted that the man would be sending Mikajia to a certain death, not if he required a willing volunteer. After all, if he lost a subject every single time he did the experiment, he would only be hurting and hindering his research. And Mikajia doubted Dr. Stephen Mabuz would allow such a thing to happen to his precious research. He took another deep breath and steeled himself, then with a determined gaze, made his way back to the doctor’s shop.

Once inside the building, the doctor wasted no time in taking him back to the same secret room they had used last time. However, this time there was no chair placed in the room. Instead, he turned around to see the doctor holding out a syringe for him to take. He told Mikajia that he would need to inject himself with the drug; the doctor would be observing his reaction from another room. The location of the injection didn’t matter, just that he used all of the drug from the syringe. With that, the doctor closed the door behind himself and made his way to the observation room then let Mikajia know he could begin when he was ready.


With one last deep breath and heavy exhale Mikajia jabbed the needle in his thigh, breathing sharply through the initial pain as he injected every last drop of the liquid into his body. And just like last time, the room shifted on him; the floor and walls changing to resemble rusty metal rather than concrete. He looked around him and saw that he was in a long corridor with many rooms on either side, at the end he could see a stairway with light shining down on the steps. As he made his way towards the light he checked a few of the rooms, slamming the doors shut faster each time. Each of the rooms seemed to possess something out of his deepest, darkest, most terrifying nightmares. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest as he ran faster and faster for the light.


As he got closer to the stairs he stopped. His eyes began widening as he tried to turn his head to look behind him, the tenseness of his muscles making this a herculean feat. There had been a sound behind him. It sounded like the growl of some type of horrific apex predator, designed to chill its prey to the bone, making them freeze in terror. All the more easy to kill then. What he saw made no sense then, because it was nothing but the empty corridor he had been walking along. However, at the opposite end from where he stood, there was nothing, just an empty pitch black space.

But as he stood there trying to figure out what had happened, he blinked hard several times. While he watched the pitch blackness, he could have sworn that he saw the whole area move. And then that growl again. As he narrowed his brows, trying to figure out what was going on, the blackness from the opposite end of the corridor let out a nightmarish screech, like some unearthly horror tearing apart metal with its bare hands as it screeched in fury.


It felt like his heart stopped as he scrambled to turn around and run. His whole body felt like it was stuck in slow motion as he tried to run away from whatever abomination may be hiding in that darkness. Each second felt like an eternity as he tried to sprint for the stairs. He was nearly to the stairs when he looked behind him one last time. He choked on air as he tried to breath in, but his breath hitched as he saw a black tendril snaking towards his foot, mere inches away.


However, right before the tendril could grab his foot, he made it to the steps. As soon as he touched the stairway, everything reverted to reality. It took him several moments to regain his bearings and to calm down his heart and breathing. He found himself cowering in a corner of the room the doctor had left him in. As he began to finally calm down enough to pick himself up off the floor, the door opened and he saw the doctor once more. He asked Mikajia to relay what he had seen, and appeared very pleased with the results, a fiendish smile spreading across his face as he listened to what Mikajia said. When he was finished with relaying the information, the doctor said no more but simply handed Mikajia his payment. He knew he wouldn’t get a proper explanation out of the doctor, so he simply took the payment and left. But he couldn’t help but wonder, what would have happened if he hadn’t made it to the stairs in time?
