Ko Lesalt

It had been some time since Ko had been back to the Farmlands outside of Marigold.  Well, that wasn't entirely true.  It had been some time since Ko had been invited back to the Farmlands.  After his previous work tilling the overgrown fields that Farmer Jim couldn't handle on his own, Jim hadn't seen fit to call Ko back for anymore work.  Something about him being a little too enthusiastic.
Not that Ko complained; he wasn't a Farmer, and working for one by doing field work didn't strike him as particularly Mercenary either.

So when he got a call from Farmer Jim, by name in fact, he was a little skeptical about the reason.  Still, money was money, and he was still recovering from the bar brawl he'd gotten into with Steel a few nights previously.  It had been good fun, but not quite as worth it as he'd have liked.  Not to mention, Jim had requested they meet outside the Farmlands themselves to explain the job.  That alone belied an interesting development that Ko couldn't ignore.

After meeting Jim and hearing the request, it made a bit more sense why he was the one getting tapped for this.  An infestation of predatory vines definitely was a call for alarm, but more importantly it was the sort of problem he could solve with a weapon.  No need to worry about keeping the fields in good order if they were already completely devastated.  Ko had agreed quickly, and left for the Farmlands shortly thereafter.

He hadn't even gone more than a few feet into the grassland before he noticed the first few vines trying to constrict him in their grip.  It was a disconcerting sensation, like being coiled by a snake made out of wood, or an octopus of woven ivy ropes.  Regardless, everytime Ko cut a vine free, more of them would snake their way forward slowly.  It was going to be a long day.

With every step Ko took, the vines continued to assault him. For the first few minutes they were less of a threat and more of an annoyance. They hindered his movement slightly and tugged him at awkward moments, but for the most part he could resist by simply forging ahead. He took big, heavy steps like someone trying to slog through mud, and for a good while he made progress that way.

Yet the deeper into the Farmlands he got, the more the scenery changed, and the more difficult it became to move. Vines were everywhere he could see now, utterly covering the barn and cottage in the distance, such that it was impossible to tell there was even any buildings in the area if you didn't know they were there to begin with. At the same time, the vines went from thin strands not even as thick as his pinky to robust branches thicker than two fingers. Worse still they approached by the hundreds, forcing Ko to stand his ground and hack them apart every few minutes.

His magic helped somewhat, being inimical to life, but his ability to cast it couldn't possibly keep up with the rampant surge of life. Short bursts earned him a reprieve for a moment, which was the most he could hope for. Otherwise it was only his sword that kept him alive. He knew the moment the vines started getting truly aggressive that getting tangled wasn't going to be a simple case of getting stuck for a while until someone else showed up. The strength they were exhibiting made Ko worried that he'd be torn apart if too many of them gained a grip on him at a time.

Despite a few close calls, after what seemed like an eternity of forging ahead through the vines, Ko saw something that seemed to be shining through the foliage in the distance. It was bright blue, and obvious to see through all the green. Seeing no other direction to go that seemed more promising, Ko turned that way and continued forcing his way through.

He was nearing the center of the Farmlands now, and the vines had become a nest of pythons. Each one was nearly as thick as his wrist, and because he'd come so close to the roots they were all incredibly long. When they were trying to loop themselves around his limbs and neck, they'd started simply throwing themselves against him, trying to bludgeon him to death with their sheer weight. Unsurprisingly, the vines were not light at all; the first blow Ko took was nearly enough to knock him off his feet on its own, which would have spelled his doom immediately.

To make matters worse, the further in he went the warmer it seemed to get. Ko was sweltering in the heat of his armor and the exertion of fighting off the vines, sweat pouring off his face in sheets. Despite the difficulty, Ko finally reached the place where the blue light was shining through the foliage. The object was partially buried in the soil, yet it continued to shine so brightly he could see it perfectly clearly. It seemed to be some kind of strange glass orb, and it was clearly magical in nature. How or why it was placed here Ko didn't care. After hours of fighting with vines, he wanted them dead and gone.

Immediately he pulled up his sword and aimed the point straight down at the offensive thing, plunging his sword into a downward thrust. To his chagrin, the point hit home only to glance off and dig into the dirt. The orb wasn't damaged at all, but the vines seemed to have sensed his intent. They writhed all around, as if roused all at once. Ko only had time to try one more thing before he was turned into a wet smear from the combined mass of thousands of vines.

Pointing his finger directly at the orb, Ko spoke the words to trigger his Cruel Lance magic, firing a thin bolt of pure Dark Magic into the orb. Rather than shatter it, the magic seemed to prick the surface of the orb, letting an inky blot stain the blue light inside. After a moment, the dark blot expanded until the orb was completely dark. Immediately, the writhing vines shuddered, going still after a few remnant twitches. They started turning brown within seconds, and Ko fell onto his haunches in relief.

Farming was a lot harder than he thought.
