It was that time again. The proprietor of the Theater in Marigold was once again organizing a big event in order to bring the population together again in a celebration of the arts. Whoever this mysterious proprietor was, their efforts seemed to have been producing fruit in recent times. More and more prominent actors had been choosing Marigold as their place of business, and in many cases young people too were getting involved. It was a veritable renaissance of the arts in Marigold.

After all the work Ko had done previously to get rid of the idiots who had been forced out by the new management, things were looking to go much smoother this time around. Management hadn't gotten wind of any kind of potential interruptions or sabotage plans, and with heavy hitters like Alice Nightingale having taken the reigns, a high turn out was practically guaranteed.

Naturally, Ko wouldn't have been hired if something hadn't gone wrong. As it turned out, Alice had been throwing her weight around a little more than usual considering the size of the production that was coming, and some of the younger actors hadn't been happy with the outcome. In Ko's opinion, he could understand their outrage, but he also thought it was foolish for them to expect anything to come of their complaining. You don't cancel out influence like Alice's by just voicing your own individual complaints.

In the end, the production had lost their primary actor for a very important role, and as chance would have it, the understudy turned out to be a total waste. He hadn't studied anything at all, and lacked the talent to make up for it in the small amount of time the production had. Luckily, depending on your perspective, Alice knew exactly who she could call on to fill such an important role at short notice.

Ko could already feel his soul shriveling up.

The play the Proprietor had chosen to turn into their latest big production was an esoteric piece from Caelum, called "The Count of Criste Monto". Ko had never heard of it, but he'd been assured it was an incredibly popular story in its home country. When he'd been given the script to glance over, Ko had to begrudgingly admit that he didn't disagree. The play had just about everything: romance, the downfall of a hero, quests for vengeance, pirates, duels to the death. If Ko wasn't being asked to participate, he might have actually enjoyed just watching from the audience.

As it was, Ko couldn't complain with his role. He hadn't been thrown into a leading position like the last time he'd acted opposite Alice as Romeo. No, Edward Mantes was being played by another actor, thank the Gods. Ko was going to be playing one of the three main villains; by his account, the main villain, Ferdinand, who helps frame Edward and steals the man's fiance while he is imprisoned. It was a bit more nefarious than Ko was used to playing it, but it'd be easier than playing the scorned lover again.

Or at least, that's what Ko thought, until he discovered that Alice would be playing the Fiance that is stolen. That meant a lot of time on stage together in compromising situations, again, which Alice didn't seem at all bothered by. Ko didn't like it, but the pay was better than the last time he did something like this, so he decided to just go along with it. Sure enough, with only a short time to get into character and memorize lines, Ko found himself spending an inordinate amount of time with Alice, enduring her 'coaching' once again.

If Ko didn't know any better, he'd think that Alice suggested him for these jobs just because she enjoyed harassing him. No, scratch that. Ko did know better; that was exactly why she always asked for him to do these things.

Ko had to give it to the Proprietor: even as an actor up on stage, this production had been an absolute blast. The entire thing was right up his alley, and from his first appearance he'd fallen right into the role of devious ne'er do well. The music was bombastic and ominous rather than peppy and whimsical, giving the entire proceeding a gravitas that Romeo and Juliet had completely lacked. Ko could have heard a pin drop during the portions of scenes where everything was silent.

It was a bit odd to be playing a man who was conspiring to steal another man's fiance. The entire affair felt incredibly sordid, and it didn't help that Alice leaned into that aspect as hard as she could. It also didn't help that Ko enjoyed his role a little bit too much. Ferdinand was a piece of utter trash, but he was kind of trash that Ko would party with after a tough mission. They were more alike than Ko would probably ever admit.

Ironically, as the show went on, Ko even felt a bit irritated that Ferdinand ended up the way he did. Not because he didn't deserve it; Ko couldn't deny that no matter how he twisted events. But still, the contrived way that Edward not only escapes confinement but discovers a cache of amazing wealth and magic that catapults him above the heights his enemies had attained, it rubbed Ko the wrong way. That kind of outcome never happened in real life.

Still, his personal feelings aside, the final confrontation between Ferdinand and Edward had been underway for a few minutes now. Having discovered the mysterious Count of Criste Monto who had ruined his family and businesses was in fact his old rival Edward, Ferdinand had challenged the man to a duel, and been defeated. But Edward, having realized that his fiance hadn't known he was alive, and finding it in his heart to forgive, had spared Ferdinand's life.

Ko had no disagreements with this part of the script; unable to accept his defeat, Ferdinand charges Edward while his back is turned, only for the Count to turn at the last second in surprise, causing Ferdinand to run himself through on his rival's sword. Ko could hear the crowd gasping in horror as he let the rage drain from his face, becoming shock. In a little last second improvisation, Ferdinand used the last of his strength to reach out for Alice, leaving the suggestion that for all his misguided actions, he'd loved her genuinely.

The standing ovation the cast got was almost payment enough. Still, the bonus wasn't unwarranted, in Ko's opinion. They were sure to ask him to do more acting in the future after this.
