That morning, Jan woke up to two new revelations. The first was awfully obvious, seeing how he could find no proper stylists in this country and as such, it was only a matter of time before he'd stand in-front of a mirror in the inn he settled at for the while, looking at his hair; "I think, I need a haircut." An aesthetic change, if anything, but one necessarily regardless, if he wanted to keep proper appearances. His Master would berate him if she heard he was soiling his own outer form, and in essence, Blue Pegasus' public image.

The other news landed, were just a bit less welcoming. By now he'd been awfully familiar with the leading actor in Marigold's theater, that very same one who'd looked to increase the theater's popularity and restore it to its former glory. With all his efforts up until now, the Sinese would have guessed the theater had at least doubled its audience in last count, and that this should suffice for the young man. He was, of course, wrong to assume so. For even if it has grown twofold, there was still work to do. Still, people would abstain from ever thinking of going there.

As such, the young man woke up to meet the very same actor, who has for a change came all the way to Jan's inn room to discuss their next course of action. If he didn't know any better, the Blue Pegasus mage would have guessed he was dealing with a fan. What a nice thought. In this time's request, it was not going to be another advertisement campaign, much as these went smoothly up to now. No, the actor had something else in mind this time: directoring.

Something the Sinese had, admittedly, always wanted to try.

That said, there was much to directing that the Sinese had absolutely no idea how to do. In light of this, the first day was spent watching; as the talk revolved around a new, longer play that was due to arrive at the end of the week, Jan Ren thought it'd be better if he learned firsthand how to handle directing the set from A to Z first; as such, spending the first day seated by the original director as he went through the moves. Announcing scenes, giving feedback, calling the shots, changing tidbits here and there and mostly, yelling. Lots, and lots, of yelling.

Such a vocal job. Was the Sinese really prepared to undertake such a task? He knew close to nothing about filmography or acting, and figured one had to have a good idea for such things if they were to orchestrate an entire set. With that in mind and some negotiations made, the young man reached a new conclusion with the leading actor, who by now seemed to be the one holding this theater together. Jan was relegated from a full-play's director to, at first, directing a couple of small scenes, several skits and plays that had nothing to do with one another. This at the very least served to take away from the stress he'd inevitably felt upon being dumped such responsibility out of the blue.

This was certainly a tougher mission, bigger shoes to fill. And the pay, was most likely going to be the exact same. So that night, the Sinese took a second, third glance on the notes he'd wrote down throughout the day, all tips and guidelines he could piece together from accompanying a director for a full day. If he had to spend all night reading those back to back, if just to manage to pull a good job, then so be it!

Last night went by with hardly any sleep, evidenced by the Sinese' deep bags under his eyes and the constant yawning; moving sluggishly to the theater, first thing in the morning. It was a good thing he didn't have to be too active in this request, namely involving battles or say, any action besides just yelling "action". He'd read up on his notes several times, memorized them, simulated and even went on to try reading the play script a couple of times; though naturally, the human brain is not capable of taking in this much material in the span of one day. By the time he woke up from his three-hour sleep, Jan Ren found out he couldn't recall most of what he'd read. Such is the price of overworking.

Regardless... "Action!!" ...The young man stepped up to the job, seated down at a rather tall chair, front-view checking out the performers on stage, the set behind and everything in behind. He had to keep an open eye for every single mishap he could find. While not being a professional director by any means, he was getting generously paid to take some weight off the primary director this theater employed. He didn't want it to go badly if he could help it, and so should be.

Except that, working with people is difficult. Especially when you're not entirely sure what you're doing. The Sinese was used to management tasks and professions, but never did he have to correct people in real-time like that and make sure they followed everything in such a close, watchful eye. Monitoring, in essence, was something he wasn't entirely used to. And it unfortunately showed, what with the actors progressively building up some aggression towards their new director, and the young man finding it troubling to solidify his spot in this play. This was going to be rougher than he thought...

Half of the following day followed in the same suit, much to the Sinese' desperation. He simply wasn't getting the hang of it, and while understanding well the concept of patience and experience, he also felt considerably stressed, not being able to get through to these people like he woud have liked. But of course he couldn't! This was so far from his usual playing field that simply throwing him into the water like that, was bound to produce such a result. He sighed as lunch break soon came, and took some time alone. He decided to take the grassy plain behind the theater, leaning behind some tree as he meditated; for the first time in a long while.

He first off, calmed down. Then revisited his memory of the director he sat by, to learn from. Breathing in, then out. Thinking to himself, what was it that he was doing wrong? How did the two differ, besides experience and initiativeness...? Perhaps the answer lied in the question itself, and it wasn't possible to orchestrate a perfect play off of first try. He had to kick it down a bit, lay off the stress and the wish to keep it perfect. Even if he was getting paid, the lead actor had to realize that Jan Ren wasn't a producer by any means. He wasn't a director, he never delved in the field. And as such, he shouldn't try to stretch out to what he couldn't do.

What a fundamentally easy concept to grasp.

After lunch break, the Sinese gathered his trusty crew and opened with, a deep bow of apology first off. Even going as far as getting on the floor, lowering his head as much as possible. Once stressed to raise himself, he continued; assuring these men that from now on, things would change for the better. It was his fault, it was his miss. And he would make up for it.

With four days remaining, Jan Ren had at least tried his best to make considerable progress. Following whatever process he was familiar with, but mindful of his crew as much as possible. Getting to know each and every one of them, their strengths and weaknesses, where they excelled and where they lacked. He was in no position to change the outline of the story, but at the very least, the script and the play itself was negotiable. It was in times like these where he brainstormed with the actors themselves, that he wondered if this was how theater work went for Masami as well. It was, a bit funny.

A week went by rather smoothly, with the overall impression turning for the better. Being the producer of this relatively short skit, Jan was granted a front-row seat, right next to the primary director. The two exchanged a few words, the Sinese in particular showing as much respect for the other as he possibly could; having come to acknowledge the other's awfully difficult job. He'd struggled with this far more than in any physical job he undertook, and that was saying something.

Lights out, curtains rising. It was showtime.

The young man gulped down, trying to ignore the cold sweat running down his body. He was terrified that the play wouldn't go well and that his crew would screw up, as that would mean his own job wasn't executed well. Regardless, the skit was surprisingly successful. The crowd enjoyed, even granting the actors a round of applause by the end of their twenty-minute small play. A tear formed by the Sinese' eye as the other director gave him a friendly punch to the shoulder, praising his work for a first-timer. Naturally, this was no pro work; things were unpolished, but covered in their own way.

Theater work, was difficult. In more than one aspect. And this was a lesson Jan Ren would engrave in his mind, even after receiving pay for his work.
