”Uhmm… Excuse me mister, is this interview part of the raffle process?” An old man with a bald head asked within the darkness of the room. ”Huh? Raffle?” Kenzo was visibly perplexed. This was not at all the reply he would expect from a criminal mastermind. Sure, the guy in front of him looked suspicious, but the first words he muttered had been a stroke of genius. Perhaps this was his way of diverting attention from the matter at hand. ”Yeah, the sorcerer magazine’s annual raffle you know? The one where they are giving off a vacation to Hargeon with the beauties of Blue Pegasus. The announcement in the paper said to come to the restaurant today, but I didn’t hear anything about an interview. To be honest, I’m kind of nervous now.”

Kenzo was not a stupid person by any means, but he could get to be quite the stubborn fella. He wasn’t sure if the man before him was simply a senile old fart or a criminal mastermind. Only a person versed in the art of deception could create an alibi as convincing as that one on the fly. For now, he had to test the waters. ”No sir. This is an investigation to find the culprit behind the kidnapping of a young girl…” For now, the merc wanted to see the man’s reaction before judging anything else. ”WHAT? Kidnapping?! I-IT must be a mistake! I’m sorry sir, I thought this was the sign up for the raffle… Of course I didn’t kidnap anyone. I wouldn’t dare to!” As a face of genuine fear filled his face, Kenzo was sure the man was not a culprit.

The second person came inside the room. She was a young looking woman. A cigarette smell followed her as she made her way inside the dimly lit room.

”Can we be done with this already? I’m wasting my time over here. I need to be someplace in around an hour. We people have lives you know? I’ve got an appointment more important than anything you’d know, so on with it and let me go!” The suspect was acting tough. After a series of questions, Kenzo could notice the mood of the woman worsening more and more. ”So, you’re saying that you know nothing about the kidnapping of the girl huh? Sure you didn’t accidentally do it?” Kenzo knew it would tick the woman’s temper. When people lost their composures was the perfect time to strike and make them commit errors. ”UUGHHH!!! HOW MANY TIMES DO I NEED TO TELL YOU STUPID RUNE KNIGHT!?? I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT. PLEASE LET ME GO!! IT’S GETTING REAL LATE” Jeez, another dead end.

The third suspect entered the room shortly afterwards. He was a youngster, a couple of years younger than the mercenary standing in front of him. If the last woman had no love for the rune knights, the third fella overflowed with more than enough admiration and love for both of them. ”Oh my god, I can’t believe I’m this lucky!!! To be helping the rune knights solve a crime! Woah, never expected one of my dreams would come true when I woke up this morning. So, Mr. Rune Knight. Kya~ Can’t believe I’m actually talking to one. What are our suspects then? If you really ask me, I think the bald guy is hiding more than he knows. There’s definitely something fishy going on here. Don’t worry, I think we’ll be able to catch the bad guy. What do we do next then?” The obnoxious kid went over and over without shutting up. He was the most annoying kind of person to deal with. Or at least that was Kenzo’s way of seeing it. Not wanting to spend another second hearing the boy melt with praises to the rune knights, he decided to let him go and interviewing the next suspect.

Soon enough, an old lady came inside. Her teeth were rotten, clearly gone to the years and bad dental hygiene. As she came inside, Kenzo was able to detect the smell of booze and smoke coming out of her hair. Truth be told, she smelled really similar to Noel. Actually, the cigarette smell also reminded him of the second suspect. ”Ya bunch of no good rune knights are always blaming us good folks. Ya sit all high and mighty and oppress the working fella. Fucking corrupt bastards. My ma was true to told me never to trust a rune knight. For all I can see, the most probable thing is that one of the higher ups wanted to fulfill a fetish with a poor young soul and decided to find a scapegoat to take the blame. You-“ ”ENOUGH!” Kenzo rose his voice as he interrupted the lady’s rant. She had gone too far. There were other knights listening to their conversation, so she could definitely get in trouble if she continued going on her train of thought. Definitely, she was the older, crankier version of the first woman he had interviewed before.

After a series of questions, Kenzo decided to bring the final suspect into the interrogation room. He was quite an interesting fella. So far, he seemed to be the most suspicious of them all. At least, right next to the bald dude in suspicion levels. ”E-erm.. Pl-please let me go! I don’t know who it was but I am sure I saw the gir- No! NO! I-I mean.. Uuh, uumm.. Aaahh.. Sorry! Please let me go, I need to get soon back home or else my father will kill me!” Kenzo looked at the young man with suspicion. He was far too nervous. He was surely hiding something he didn’t want the mercenary finding out. If it was the kidnapping of the girl, the better for Kenzo.

”Hm… I’m not sure you’ll be able to make it. Not at least until we get definitive information on the whereabouts of the girl. If you need to get out soon, you better start ‘fessing. The man twitched in his seat as he heard Kenzo speak. A dark part of Kenzo was quite enjoying torturing the poor soul. He wouldn’t admit it, but it was rather amusing to see his reactions.

Nevertheless, Kenzo stood out of the room as each of the suspects waited in their seats. ”This is gonna be a tough one Marin. I’ll need to really think about this.” The mercenary spoke with the rune knight with a serious tone as he scratched his chin. ”Don’t worry Kenzo. You’ve done more than enough to help. Take some time, we’ll continue with the investigation in the meantime.” The knight pat Kenzo’s shoulder as he sighed. They were having a rough day. Kenzo had been summoned that morning by a page of the magic council. The previous day, Kenzo had helped some of the higher ups with keeping an eye on Margaret and reporting to them what her performance was. Today, they needed his help to solve a crime. Apparently, a young girl had been kidnapped within Era. The main five suspects had been rounded up in a restaurant in the heart of the city and they needed someone that could get information out of them. Kenzo was bummed that he couldn’t help much though. He had met Marin Awedin a couple of months before while helping Kaz with some quests, and he had grown to like the man.

As he made his way out of the restaurant and next to the corner, Kenzo found a girl crying her eyes out as she sat by the sideroad. Kenzo wanted to clear his mind from the case, so he approached her to see what was going on.

Not even a minute had passed before the mercenary connected the dots. A couple of questions later, and Kenzo had found their missing girl. Marin had done goofed. Kenzo was definitely going to tease him with this for a long time…

The good news was that at least the case had been solved.
