Ace Brookes

The gas mage has had a rather hectic week of non-stop action. For the most part he’d been doing as many quests as he could. This has led him to interacting with several of Magnolia’s businessmen and priests, not to mention his trainings that have introduced him to a couple members of Fairy Tail. Magnolia was quickly becoming somewhere he was familiar with. Ace tried his best to not stay at the same inn or B&B for a prolonged period to get him to know the city better and experience different aspects of it. The young mage loved diversity and was intrigued by how every city had a different impact on whoever lived there.

Unluckily for him though, he’d moved out of the inn that was just across the street from Father Jerad’s church. Upon picking up his next request, he knew that he’d have to go back to the church and walk all the way back to East Magnolia for the night. He had hoped that all this effort was actually worth it in the end. Apparently, there was a wave of sickness that had been spreading across Magnolia like wildfire. Father Jerad was seeking someone’s help in handing out a batch of medicine to those who can’t afford it.

The Rune Knights’ promotion deadline was to be anytime this coming week. There had been loads of rumors circulating around Rune Knights saying who was most likely to get promoted and who they’ve seen the captain’s scouts watching. It all meant very little to Ace. All he was really concerned about was getting his quests done as best as he could. His superiors had a keen eye for talent and he wouldn’t expect them to be naïve in their selection. That’s why the gas mage wasn’t really one to stop and listen to rumors. After all, there was a reason why those who spread gossip around stayed as pages while he made it up. If he did actually get this promotion then he was no longer going to be looked down upon. As a Seated Rune Knight, Ace would like to start making changes that benefit everyone in his community at least. That was his first step. For now though, he had to work as hard as he could to put himself in the position to make that happen.

Upon his arrival at Father Jerad’s church, the young mage witnessed a number of villagers standing outside the steps, waiting for their turn to walk in. It must’ve been a very stressful day for Father Jerad having to deal with all those patients at once. Being the fourteen year old he was, he squeezed in between those at the door and pretty much skipped the queue to get inside. “Hi father” he said as soon as he seen him walking around the church hastily. “I got your request” the gas mage added. “Ahh beautiful!” Despite the stressful state he was in, Father Jerad always seemed to have a smile on his face and be happy which Ace felt really impacted the patients positively.

“What we’ll be doing today is pretty much handing out medicine to all those in the queue. I suspect more will be coming in as the sickness is spreading like wildfire” he said as he smiled at one of the patients. “Oh also, wear this. You wouldn’t want to be catching any of it while on the job.” He then handed Ace a facemask and smiled warmly. “Let’s begin shall we?” Father Jerad instructed Ace to start moving along the cue and handing all the patients facemasks for their own safety too. It looked like Father Jerad was a very organized and hygienic man who knew what he was doing. After all, there was a reason why all those people who resided in Magnolia trusted him and followed his judgement blindly.

Ace had a feeling the job would take a couple hours at least if not more. He didn’t mind it though as he was going to get paid for it in the end anyway. The gas mage picked up a carton stacked with nice small medicine bottles, each with a little label instructing the patient of which dosage he or she should take based on their age. Ace was impressed by how neat Father Jerad was and appreciated his way of doing things. And so the Rune Knight came up to the patients one by one, asking for their name and age, then handing them one of the bottles after crossing out the irrelevant dosage instructions and only leaving on the ones that the patient had to follow. He’d come across all shapes and sizes of patients. Some were in a much better physical state than others, yet Ace still tried his best to be as nice as he can to them and reassure them of Father Jerad’s recipe’s effect.

The sun was beginning to set and slowly there was less people coming into the church. The few patients that had been in a really bad state were instructed by Father Jerad to stay over at the church for one night, at least until they were capable of walking around. He wasn’t going to let them off before he made sure they were going to be fine on their own.

A while after that Father Jerad called for Ace to come over, “Everything going good, young man?” Ace nodded, “Yes sir.” Father Jerad smiled at the young mage and thanked him again for all his help around the church and how these people weren’t going to forget what good he’s done for them. He gave Ace his reward and a small bottle of medicine. “What’s this for sir?” Ace asked. “You’d need it after being around all those sick people for this long. Strengthen your immunity.” Ace thanked the Father and told him not to hesitate if he ever needed any more help before he left Magnolia. He took his reward and walked out of the church to head back home for a good rest after being on his feet all day.
