Well aware that the renovation work wasn’t complete, Haru headed to the docks the next morning along with his partner, offering their assistance to Reign. They didn’t have any cases assigned to them and neither of them seemed comfortable taking the day off when they knew they can be someplace where they could be of use. Reign had a huge crowd around him, conversing casually with the commoners. The crowd seemed pumped and ready to get to work on something big. Upon spotting the two Knights, the noble smiled and invited them closer to have a chat.

“Welcome back!” he said, shaking their hands. “We were free, and I thought we could help more with the reconstruction work,” Haru said. Reign was extremely grateful for their offer and the group began the final touches on the docks. With that many pairs of hands, the dock was good as new by the afternoon.

It would seem, however, that Reign had another project in his mind, which he revealed as they all ate lunch together. “I’m thinking of building a boat to honour my father,” he announced, and the whole room went silent for just a moment before they began to cheer. The excitement in the locals’ voices was contagious and made Haru want to stick around and work with them some more. After all, he was supposed to work out and get stronger. This would allow him to do that, while also helping the community.

Akira wasn't as pleased to hear about Reign's plans, mostly because the concept of honouring someone evaded her in general. Although, there were details about it that helped her stay on boat with the idea. One of the biggest thing  was that Reign sought to build something useful, rather than waste the resources on building some crappy statue or a monument that was only going to take up land and space from those who probably needed it more. She chewed her meal in silence, but smiled and nodded ever so politely while she heard out his ideas.

He seemed to have quite the charm to entice the crowd and gain their aid. But if he had been consistently providing help with the ventures at base level with the ones who worked for him, perhaps the trust that he inspired was justified. The meal was hearty, while the noble certainly did not skimp, he also did not seek to impress or buy the service of the Knights. He was humble in his approach and treated them well, but not in a manner that suggested he was trying to gain favours.

They all sat on a large round table, Tsuru and she just earned seats close to him, perhaps given that he'd recognised the parts they played within the protective faction. Reign definitely had nice things to say about the Knights, but instead of flattery, Akira thought he was merely optimistic and either misinformed, or just ignorant.

For once, a noble actually appreciated the work they did as Rune Knights. As much as he criticizes his fellow Knights while he is out in the field, Haru hated it when others talked down upon his faction. He was truly glad that Reign was grateful for the work they did and was optimistic of their growth. It was nice to see that, even those among the crowd who were initially wary of speaking to them as they were Rune Knights, were now getting a little comfortable around them.

It was surprising how fast things started to fall into place around Reign. He had just announced his plan and the local shipwright had already pulled out a plan for the construction. “I was working on the design during my free time. I would be honoured to have your father’s name on a ship I designed,” he said, bowing to his nobility and handing the blueprint. Reign was extremely kind. He thanked the man and gave him a large bag of Jewels in return for the blueprints. The shipwright hesitated for a moment but did not have the heart to refuse Reign. So, he bowed again and took the bag, while uttering humbled words of gratitude.

With the blueprints in his hand, it was time to get the materials required to start the work on the ship. Looking pointedly at the two Knights, Reign requested them not to use magic for this project, as it was to honour his father. With that, the group dispersed to go fetch the materials and bring it back to the docks.

Now that was the kind of sentimentality that made Akira a little wary. It wasn't bad, she just believed such emotions could be a little misplaced. Much like she found the concept of honouring to evade her logic. Similarly, at face value, she couldn't see the reasoning that led him to limit, or rather, completely restrict them from using magic. What was the point of adding the element of struggle just for the sake of it, it felt impractical.

Even if it was to possibly symbolise the struggle his father could have gone through and such, it still felt a little far-fetched. She resisted the urge to give her two cents on the matter and instead decided to find other plausible reasons for the choice. Over time, she'd realised that there was more wisdom and experience to be gained, if not everything was contradicted and benefit of doubt was offered. Especially in the cases where there was no evidence of malice in intent.

What she did notice, was that a lot of the commoners around Reign, were either not mages or had certainly not trained in any capacity to boast of their powers. Perhaps, he wished for the crowd to partake in the building process without feeling like they were useless and entirely outclassed by the few who were otherwise gifted. She couldn't know for sure if that possibly swayed his judgement, but if it did, that was noble indeed, in fact more so because he had the sense to guise it under a personal reason, rather than point it out.

Haru didn’t put much thought into why Reign had asked them not to use magic. He simply agreed because they were doing it to honour his father, and if he felt that purpose was going to be blemished by the act of using magic to construct the ship, then there was no point in offering the help. His brain seemed to look for the quicker and simpler solution rather than ponder over the character of the one who made the request. Was such cut-and-dry approach to judgement a vice or a virtue on him, is yet to be seen.

Most of the heavy lifting was from the shop of Mywand Olden and that was where they duo was directed to go to. They were accompanied by a few commoners. With their help and their cheerful company, the chore didn’t seem as boring or monotonous. The group carried the lumber from Mywand’s warehouse. It took almost half of the afternoon just to transport the required materials. However, hearing the stories of the locals and their legends was fun and distracting enough.

By the evening all the goods were transported, and the crowd began their work. With the guidance from the shipwright who designed the boat, they all started constructing the hull of the boat. Where the shipwright needed physical strength, Haru made himself available, while his partner was left to supervise and ensure the people followed the blueprint perfectly. The shipwright had some serious obsessive compulsive disorder that made him twitch every time a nail was hammered an inch away from the designated spot.

It was rare for the two to have so much company. It was even rarer for Akira to find it within her to enjoy it. While she still remained tight-lipped and couldn't muster up a friendly enough demeanour, she merely managed to seem a little aloof. A few folks recognised her from the show, that piece of information made her cringe a little bit, but also provided a nice opening for her to get to know people without their first reaction to her being a negative one.

Eventually, she dropped the 'diva' act as one of the younger citizens had perceived and labelled it as. She'd found the label amusing but was quick to dissolve it as the day went on. Her reception was definitely quite starkly different from the way it used to be in the past. So much had changed in the year, it would seem she'd never quite stop marvelling at the extent of her growth in such a short span of time. Unfortunately, she wasn't much help in doing the heavy lifting.

But she did offer her services in aiding the caravan drivers who were not quite adept at carrying such big loads through the narrow streets. The young girl also made up for it by eventually warming up to the crowd and sharing a few uplifting stories of their adventures as Knight. Their recent success in Baska featured prominently.

They obviously couldn’t finish building the entire boat in one day. So, when the sun set, just like the day before, Reign gathered all the workers and offered his lavish dinner. It was the third time the Knights were sharing their meal together with the locals. Haru was starting to get a feel on the typical life of a social worker under the nobility of Hargeon. If every town’s noble had the charm and wit to rally their people like this and fix their town’s infrastructure, Fiore would flourish exponentially in weeks. The fact that it doesn’t happen everywhere proved how special Reign was.

After dinner, they group dispersed, promising to meet up again the next day to continue working on the boat. And every single one of them kept that promise, including the two Knights. Having been with them for three days by then, Haru knew most of them by name and was good friends with them. Just like how he enjoyed listening to their stories, they were intrigued about the adventures the two Knights had gone through while they did their job throughout the country. Once they learnt that Akira had both light and darkness within her, every single one of them expressed this perfect combination of fear and admiration. And the admiration part only grew when Haru proudly described her achievements, despite being so young.

Reign balanced his excitement and expectations rather well with the limitations of the townsfolk and the workforce that he had gathered. While never appearing to be pushy, he did seek to have them harness the best of themselves and efficiently finish the task at hand. Akira was scrutinising the noble and it seemed the healer was too, although perhaps his scrutiny was less intentional than hers was. It was apparent however that the Knights had quickly gathered that this Lord had something that wasn't common, a trait that was missing in the other noblemen scattered across Fiore and one that the kingdom was in dire need of.

She had reluctantly revealed the details of her magic, mostly because someone recognised her and already knew of her darkness. Apparently the woman and her son had seen her grow up in Marigold. They joked about how everyone always thought she was a good for nothing and how wrong they were. Despite their admission, their words stung her just a little. She'd made peace with her past, but it still left her worn.

She couldn't exactly recall the mother and son, but they seemed readily accepting of her when Tsuru eagerly... perhaps too eagerly, revealed that she'd since then harnessed the power of light as well. She preferred people not knowing the details of her capabilities, but that was hardly something she could avoid anymore. They'd both employed their magic on numerous occasions scattered all over Fiore. As they finished up dinner, she decided to return the favor and glorified Tsuru's part in all their skirmishes and hurdles.

Haru found Akira’s praises of his contribution in all their adventurers flattering and a little bit exaggerated. He didn’t even have to try hard to be modest about it; he was clearly far less impactful with his abilities than his partner. And while he had never dared to voice it out loud, the healer was conscious that he was only being promoted so quickly because the two of them were a team and it wouldn’t be ‘fair’ to promote only Akira while he was part of every mission that she was too. But he was well aware that he was far less powerful and tactical than she was, and would have never made it this far had he been alone. In fact, his anger and the harsh treatment of his subordinates was proof enough that he wasn’t ready for the responsibilities. Nevertheless, he simply smiled and took the compliments from his partner and in extension, the locals.

The third day went by as usual and the ship was coming along pretty well. The shipwright was not upset with anything, which was a good sign considering how flustered he got with the tiniest of details. Knowing him, Haru had kept a close watch on the workers and kindly reminding them to follow the blueprint carefully so as to not upset the designer. Thankfully, most of the locals were more than understanding and accommodating of the shipwright’s quirk. In fact, they respected his talent and perfection. Happy with the progress, Reign announced a ‘grand’ dinner the next day once the ship is complete—which Haru couldn’t fathom as he presumed they were having the grand dinner every night. He had to wonder what ‘grand’ really meant if what they were enjoying the last three days were just the usual according to nobility standards.

Tsuru's humility was endearing. However, she had meant every word she'd spoken. Perhaps the healer didn't quite realise how much she appreciated that he had her back on so many occasions. In fact, she technically owed him her life, he'd saved her from herself when she adopted her light and provided all the support she ever needed. The locals were quite charmed by the scarlet haired healer, one of the kids innocently asked him about the x shaped scar on his cheek, perhaps hoping for another story filled with valour and excitement.

Akira tensed, not sure how the healer would handle being put on the spot like that, but Reign took the lead in concluding the meal for the day and dismissing them with the hope of seeing them all back to work the next day. Akira truly was mesmerised by the enraptured state of the locals. She'd seen them working so consistently and not even expecting much in return. This was not the Hargeon she'd witnessed when she visited on vacations growing up... But then Reign was not too old, his rule had to have been recent.

Perhaps it was also the strong sense of community. She knew the importance of feeling like one belonged, especially because that reality had evaded her most of her life. They were accepting of one another's quirks and passion. The fact that designers took their jobs way too seriously had become a somewhat recurring realisation for Akira. Nonetheless, much like Tsuru, Reign and the other citizens, she appreciated the detail and thought he put into his work.

Haru was going to make up a funny story when the kid asked about his scar, but was grateful when he was interrupted in the middle by Reign because he knew he would have failed the joke. That mark on his face was from a past that he no longer remembers. As surprising as it may be for many, his occasional nightmares of this past did not intrigue him, but only scared him from ever trying to find out about his past. He had a feeling he wasn’t going to like it and that fear had overwhelmed the curiosity and kept him away from Joya for the year. Thankfully, the announcement of a ‘grand’ dinner distracted the curious crowd away from his story and they were back to singing praises of the Reign and his late father.

The next day arrived and the boat looked finished, at least from the outside. The hull’s contours were perfect and the lacrima-powered turbines functioned efficiently. Now, only the interiors were left, and compared to the all the hard work required for the main hull, this was a piece of cake. It did involve a lot of attention to minute details, but the work wasn’t exhausting and it gave plenty of time to engage in conversations with the lovely people again. Unfortunately for Haru, that kid was interested in his scar again, and brought up the question in the middle of the day when there was nothing else to distract the crowd. “Umm…” the healer stammered, trying to come up with something other than his sob story, but was once again saved by Reign. “He got those by fighting the monsters under the beds of kids who skipped school. Now, off you go,” the noble said, playfully patting the back of the kid, who ran off towards the school building.

It was apparent that Reign had understood the topic to be a sensitive one for Haru. So, the announcement of a grand dinner the previous night right in the middle of that question wasn’t an accident either. The healer looked at the noble gratefully, who gave an understanding nod before appreciating everyone’s work on the beautiful interiors.

Unlike Tsuru, who seemed rather at ease about working on the interiors, Akira was convinced that there was a lot more they'd have to be careful off. In some ways it was indeed easier, simply because mistakes wouldn't be as punishing, unless they poked a whole through the exterior. Or if they distributed the weight of the structures wrong and caused the ship to become lopsided, or worse not sail at all and fall over. She was chewing at her lower lip as she worried about the details, almost as though she too was the designer now.

In all honesty the structure and integrity of the ship interested her immensely. It would seem she had a small flare of interest for engineering such ships. It would seem that the kid who had asked Tsuru the question earlier wasn't one who would give up easy, except for the fact that it made her partner uncomfortable she had to admit that she admired his incessant and unquenchable curiosity. If he could maintain that instinct he had a chance to accumulate more knowledge. However, Reign came to the scarlet-haired boy's rescue again, causing Akira to smirk ever so gently.

She wondered if he was going to demand that the healer at least let him know the truth in return, most people were wary of secrets, but it would seem the noble knew better and recognised the value of trusting those around him. It was truly a welcome change, although Akira found herself worrying a little about his lack of scepticism. He seemed to have recognised her anxious state too and reassured the girl that everything was going to be fine and that they'd done great work so far, before he moved onto help a group of locals construct a structure on the deck.

Once the kid was sent away, the rest of the crowd understood Reign’s motive too and changed the subject quickly to ensure there wasn’t an awkward silence within the ship. They were back to sharing and laughing over their everyday stories and gossips. There were even a few romances that grew over the course of this ship building project, and that reminded Haru that he still had not given Akira the dress he bought for her. He had hoped to get back to the quarters after work, fetch the packet and knock on her door, but he chickened out every single night. It was a good thing his gift wasn’t something that would go to waste if not consumed within a few days.

By the end of the evening, the ship was fully ready. But Reign did not wish to test it on the waters yet, as it was late at night. He threw the grand feast he promised and Haru was enlightened on what a noble’s feast looked like. He had been to the party at Magnolia, which was grandiose. But this one, despite being small and within a small hall, beat that party by the sheer number of the dishes available and the royal quality of them all. Reign had even somehow found out that Haru was a vegetarian and had accordingly modified the menu so that he had plenty of options.

Once they had all enjoyed the extremely delicious and ample food, it was time for drinks. Considering there were kids, Reign had made two different sections: one section with alcoholic ones and the other with just fruit juices. After Haru revealed that he doesn’t drink, the nobleman made it his job to ensure that no underage person sneaks in for a glass of wine. The healer took his job very seriously, and stood next to the stall like a bouncer in a bar.

Reign's perceptiveness was definitely worth acknowledging. She quickly gathered that he'd been gauging the palates of all the people who had agreed to help him, over the course of all the meals he'd provided before. Now the menu was carefully designed to feature the favourite dishes, but dressed with the finesse that the hired master chefs brought to the consumables. Tsuru sure had quite a feast in terms of the options waiting for him, it'd seem he wasn't the only vegetarian in the crowd.

For the time being, the young girl was done watching the well calibrated moves made by Reign. He had set in stone his role as a leader. While he wasn't perfect, or rather didn't fit Akira's absolute ideal, he was very good at getting things done. On top of that he didn't reek of aristocracy, entitlement and selfishness. Now that their work was completed, Akira actually looked forward to enjoying a good party. Given the noble's humbler gatherings, she hadn't expected it to be as grandiose as it was. All the townsfolk who had been grimy and sweaty as they worked tirelessly had really gone out of their way to dress up and highlight their fancier sides.

It would seem Hargeon was still one of the posher towns. It made sense, after all it was the town of Blue Pegasuses. When she made her way to the dinner, she felt like she really wasn't dressed to impress. While the townsfolk were too kind to judge her about it, it was apparent that they'd expected better, especially because a lot of them had witnessed her at her finest in the fashion show. She avoided the crowded centre of the room and stuck to the edges making a bee-line for the makeshift bar only to notice that her partner had taken it upon himself to guard it. She pouted and stood by him, wondering if she could find a way to sneak a glass.

The bartenders sure made his job extremely difficult, as they displayed colourful alcoholic drinks that caught the attention of many young kids. Haru had to practically wrestle half a dozen pre-teens from swarming the region and breaking open the shiny, aerating bottles just to see the colours. While the juice bar was colourful too, it would seem the bubbling and foaming drinks attracted them a lot more. Meanwhile, his partner came to the scene and he thought she was there to help him deal with the kids. Instead, he saw her pouting, and he shook his head as his eyes widened. Sure, it would be less trouble if she decided to take a sip, considering she was sixteen and smart enough to not over do it. But there was no way he was going to give the green signal. However, there would be plenty of opportunities for her to sneak one out while he dealt with the kids.

It was just an hour to midnight by the time the crowd thinned, leaving only the two Knights and another couple who were so sloshed that they were on top of each other, without caring about where they were. Embarrassed, the healer turned away and pretended that he didn’t notice them and walked out of the hall. It was yet another reminder that he should pluck up the courage and ask Akira out already. However, since it was already too late, he decided he would ‘let her rest’ and ask the big question the next day. And yet again, he had postponed, afraid of facing the consequences in case she didn’t feel the same way that he did.

Luckily for her, the healer was so engrossed in trying to stop the children from accessing the drinks that she found an opening to steal a glass away for herself. She'd barely taken a sip of the sweet bubbly liquid, assessing its taste and realising that it couldn't have had too much alcohol in to begin with. She tried to be fancy and swirl the liquid around her mouth and such, but regretted not downing the glass when her eyes met Reign. She had to put the glass away after the nobleman made it point to walk over to her and chide her playfully. She really regretted not downing the damn thing. The Shimada, grumbled about it to herself, but ensure that neither the healer nor the nobleman caught her doing so.

While the party started off well, she still wasn't too accustomed to hanging around large crowds, it made her nervous and elicited a feeling of suffocation. Unwilling to feel stifled anymore, she decided to slip out and take a stroll around the block. She missed her nightly walks anyways. The Lunar mage wondered if Tsuru would find a moment away from his duty as gatekeeper of the alcohol and join her under the moonlight soaked sky. She didn't hope much though, he was a driven man and he took his job seriously, besides that was one of the traits she admired most about him.

Nonetheless, she found herself lamenting on the possibilities of the future. It felt imminent that she had Tsuru might have to split if they didn't find a captain to serve under together. Squads could change, circumstances could drive a wedge between the camaraderie they had going for them. In fact, she still hadn't found the courage to confide in him about those bleary nights...

Haru had to wake up very early in the morning, with less than six hours of sleep. Reign had insisted on inaugurating the ship the moment sun rises. When he reached the shipyard, it was filled with all the people they had worked with. He wondered how the townsfolk managed to be so fresh and awake when most of them had had the same hours of sleep or less. Haru was practically half-asleep when he arrived at the location, and had to constantly rub his eyes to ensure he didn’t simply lean on a wall and went to sleep.

A kind lady had offered some coffee off her flask, after seeing her struggle, and the healer took her up on the offer shamelessly. After a cup of coffee, he felt a lot better and was as excited as the rest of them to see the ship float. Once everyone who helped build the ship was there, Reign gave a short heart-touching speech about his father. He then picked up an axe and cut the end rope that held the ship from falling into the water. The moment it was cut on one end, the rope unravelled violently, and the ship began to slide down the ramp and into the shallow end of the docks.

Everyone was tense and was holding their breath, hoping and praying that their work was perfect and that the ship would float. The ship tilted to an extreme degree the moment it landed on the water, making most people let out a groan of shock. However, the shipwright wasn’t fazed. He knew it was going to be fine, and it was. After a few oscillations, the tilt degree dampened quickly and the ship was afloat. The crowd cheered loudly and Haru could see Reign wipe the tears of happiness off his cheeks.

She stretched and yawned as the force of life courses through her eliciting a stir early in the morning. The Shimada groaned softly and tugged her blanket over her head, as though coaxing the slumber to return. The nip in air made it difficult to get out of bed, but lying in it listlessly was boring too. Finally, she steeled her heart and slipped out.

She wondered how long she'd be able to harness the discipline she practiced during her stint as the model. It helped a fair bit keeping up with Reign's schedule too, perhaps it was time she accepted that being nocturnal wouldn't serve her too well. On the flip side though, it was common perception that dangerous things occurred at night, which made her susceptible to being feared, as though her nocturnal strolls were prowls, but it also gave her the opportunity to change the perception by doing her job right and nipping criminal activity in the bud. Aren't I ambitious this morning? she thought, somewhat dully as she began her morning routine.

It was odd because in more ways that one she was excited about testing the vessel they'd built. It was supposed to set sail today and even though it wasn't song journey, it made her nervous. Reign trusted his townsfolk enough to volunteer to be on the ship as it was tested and his loyal helpers agreed to. Akira stifled her scepticsm and her under-confidence in her own abilities and knowledge. When they got there, first the vessels was merely allowed to slip into the water. When that went well it was anchored and a queue was set up for people to climb in.

After the crowd’s cheers simmered down, Reign boarded the ship, fully trusting that it was going to function well. He invited everyone who worked on it, including the two Knights, to come take a short cruise with him. Haru wasn’t too worried. The designer had put in enough redundancies and safety equipment within the boat for the whole crew to get out safely, in case there was going to be an accident. But at the same time, he was confident that there was no flaw in the ship and it was going to sail well.

Haru watched as Reign steered the ship and the Hargeon port slowly drifted away from their vicinity until it was merely a line of tiny building blocks. A few kilometres into the sea, they anchored the ship and enjoyed the view, watching the deep red sun rise up above the horizon and the dolphins dive in and out of the water next to the ship. The people on the boat were extremely happy that the ship functioned flawlessly. Reign raised a toast to his father and to new beginnings, as he announced the ship would be used for humanitarian missions around the coast of Fiore, helping all those who are stranded in the vast ocean.

After almost an hour, the ship was back at the port and the people on land. They bid farewell to each other and went about their business. Reign thanked the two Knights for their hard work and was soon engulfed in a conversation regarding another social project with a new group. Haru admired the man for his tireless work as he walked back towards the quarters.

Their journey into the water went without a hitch. She was a little more nervous than her partner, Reign or the designer. The girl really had the intent to let Tsuru know what she'd been through and all the information she'd been keeping from him. It felt imperative given that their separation was imminent and she really didn't want to risk him finding out from elsewhere at a later date. This was especially something she had to work towards if she intended on giving him a reason to stay in touch.

Perhaps on a freshly made ship in the middle of the sea wasn't exactly the best time to have such a sensitive and personal discussion. The mood was light, she definitely didn't want to speak of death. Her choice was further reinforced by the fact that there were curious young kids all along who really had a knack for eavesdropping, she definitely did not want to scar them. While a few stories that they'd shared about their journeys did involve a little bloodshed and violence, the healer and the Lunar mage had glazed over those details, focusing more on the thrill and the drama, than the threats and the danger.
