#1Akira Shimada

Akira Shimada
The topic of demons and Akira's conflicts and alleged victories against them, haunted their limited conversations like a ghost. Since they had promised Inspector Nilan that they'd continue patrolling whilst still in Orchidia the two were strolling down one of the sparsely populated streets. Aki's eyes caught a large sign that read for rent... Her heart sank as her mind urged her to go check it out, some distance between the two Knights could perhaps aid them in putting the prickly topic to rest.

Little did the Shimada know that she was projecting her scepticism onto Tsuru and that the poor healer happened to be mentioning her- or rather their- feats with pride, innocently, with no ulterior intent. She found herself gravitating to the apartments, almost as though she had lost control of her own feet. Luckily, she noticed a man, with his head flopped into his hand. He stood by the entrance and she redirected herself towards him, instead of towards the sign.

She didn't really have a game plan, but trusted that something would come up and she'd be able to avoid offering blatant evidence that she was considering moving out of the Rune Knight barracks and away from her partner. 'Hey! You! You look like you have a good head on your shoulder! Mind helpin' me?' the man said leaning against that framed the threshold of the apartment. Aki relaxed visibly as she waited for Tsuru.

Although he was quite enthusiastic about the patrolling when he said yes to the inspector, even Haru was getting quite annoyed at these eventless, boring routine and wondered when they will get out of this town. He enjoyed travelling and they have been in Orchidia for far too long. The duo even had a legit reason to leave; they were asked to come to the headquarters at their convenience to finish up the paperwork regarding their promotion. So, the only thing that was holding them up were these promised patrols.

With slouched shoulders, the healer dragged himself along the streets, not giving the slightest of attention to where he was going but just following his partner. For a good minute he didn’t realize that she had paused and took a detour towards the apartments. When he did, the implications shocked him out of the semi-trance he was in. “Don’t tell me you are planning on settling down here,” he asked incredulously. It wasn’t like he could stop her if she chose to. All she had to do was write a petition and ask for a permanent posting in the town now that she was a Lieutenant.

However, when he noticed that she was walking up to a rather disoriented man, he let out a sigh of relief. He assumed the man needed help and that was why she approached the apartments.

'No, of course not!' she exclaimed, with just a little too much vigour, but hopefully he missed it. It wasn't about settling down, so that wasn't an entire lie... It was always meant to be a temporary option away from the barracks. The whole deal seem to blow over as she approached the man and cautiously offered her aid. 'Yeah... What's up?' she asked, without already entering a verbally binding contract. He told them that his mother lived with him and intended on baking today, apparently the last time she did there was an incident and a small fire. Aki wasn't sure if he was just saying this to highlight the gravity of the situation or not, but regardless she found it sweet that he was looking out for his mother at least.

In a pang of homesickness she simply nodded and took the details from the man as he thanked the duo and said that there'd be compensation. 'I'm sure whatever she's baking will be just fine...' the girl said, uncharacteristically. It was a joke, but she did hope that perhaps she could get a taste of the treat, grannies always had neat tricks up their sleeves. She led the duo to the house and sure enough a lovely silver-haired and slightly hunched woman answered. Akira explained that they were sent by the son and the granny made it point to let them know that she didn't need to be attended to, but wouldn't mind the company.

It would seem the man needed help looking after his mom while he left for the day. Haru couldn’t help but wonder what was so important that he couldn’t stay home himself, and from how the man looked, he quickly presumed he was just going to go get drunk again. Nevertheless, he could appreciate that he had the decency to find someone and not just let the old lady be without anyone to take care of her. So, he followed his partner straight to the apartment without any complaints. Besides, the idea of spending the day indoors didn’t seem bad, considering how much they have been patrolling for the inspector.

The old lady was happy to have guests, but wasn’t too keen on accepting that they were here to ensure she doesn’t burn the place down. She moved slowly around the house, but with purpose. Haru was surprised how adamant she was about constantly doing something and not wasting time. There was a powerful lesson that young people of his generation could learn. She knitted, solved puzzles, and kept engaging the two Knights in one conversation or another, making sure there wasn’t single awkward moment during the stay. Sure, she kept repeating the same story in her past many times, forgetting that she had already narrated it before. Haru didn’t have the heart to stop her, so he heard it again and again, trying hard to fake the surprise and intrigue every time. Finally, about mid-afternoon, she decided to bake some cookies for her guests and began preparing the dough.

Akira Shimada
Akira had settled herself in a plush chair. The comfort of the house and of the warmth of the granny's company was quick to slash through her the guarded walls she usually built around herself. The greying woman had been kind enough the offer her a home knit throw to cover herself with. So Aki sat there, snug and wrapped like a small baby. At some point she was offered tea and she'd shamelessly accepted, the granny was all to happy to oblige, it was apparent that she missed company and liked entertaining.

Akira had lost track of the stories the duo heard, about times in the past, better times no doubt. The words and sounds served mostly as a lull in the back ground. It was astounding how the atmosphere had such a calming effect on the girl. Her usual issue of not having slept enough had only intensified ever their excursion at the flower festival. Not only was the little sleep she had plagued with nightmares, she no longer had the luxury of getting up late given their promise to Nilan. The comfort coupled with the mysterious sense of safety had her drifting in and out of slumber as the day progressed. She only truly woke up and sat straight when there was talk of making cookies.

He had no idea when it happened, but he noticed Akira was fast sleep when he turned towards her seeking help as he had to hear the same story for the fifth time. There she was, sleeping soundly like a baby all snuggled up in a plush chair. There was no way he would wake her up, even if it meant he had to enjoy the repeated tales all by himself.

Finally, after what seemed to the umpteenth time, the old lady decided to stop speaking about her past and move on to baking cookies; and that woke his partner right up. Haru couldn’t help but smile. It was as though they were at Akira’s grandma’s place; she seemed so comfortable, which was a very rare sight.

Haru offered to help with the kneading of the cookie dough after he noticed the granny struggling to get it right. The sweet lady thanked him kindly as she passed the bowl to him. However, this gave her time to reminisce again, and she began retelling stories of her past while he kneaded the dough. The healer kept nodding and smiling at crucial junctures, which he knew by heart at that point. When the dough was mixed to granny’s satisfaction, she pulled a strange glowing bottle and added what looked like blue sugar. “There’s my secret ingredient,” she chimed as she added a handful of it. Haru didn’t dare ask what it was, for it is her secret.

Akira Shimada
This day became less about them taking care of the granny and more about her taking care of them, at least for the young Shimada. She didn't budge and let Tsuru help the older woman all by himself. The girl merely wrapped the soft woollen blanket tighter around herself. In fact, she had the gall to attempt directing Tsuru while she sat around comfortably.

When she piped up about the ingredients both she and the granny were in agreement about the fact that butter and cream in the dough gave the cookies the perfect crumbly yet moist texture. As the boy struggled to achieve that perfection, the woman pointedly added something she attributed to be a special ingredient. It seemed to be some sort of bluish and shimmering powder, while Akira was a little wary she was also a little curious.

Once the cookies were in the oven, the grandma shared yet another story, since the Shimada had only half-heard the incidents the nostalgic woman shared, she wasn't sure if she knew this one entirely or not and heard it with keen interest as opposed to her partner who wore a sort of look that barely hid his bored and jaded expression. ''Turn it off!' Aki ordered Tsuru, as the faintest scent of smoke wafted through the air. Once it was all done, they were offered the cookies, it turned out that the blue powder would enhance their ability to use their magical powers just a little longer...

Now that his partner was awake, Rynah had a new pair of eager ears to tell her stories. Haru was glad; the poor guy didn’t know how much longer he could go through that. In fact, he was so thankful towards Akira for relieving him from the torture that he didn’t mind her ordering him around. Anything to get away from the story.

He rushed to the oven and put it off immediately. The smell of perfectly baked cookies was mouth-watering. And Rynah’s son was smart to send someone to look after his mother. The way she was engrossed in her stories, there was no way the old lady would have moved an inch to put off the oven. He wasn’t even sure if the burning charcoal smell would alert her of the disaster.

Thankfully, he was there to save the cookies. He put on the mittens and removed the tray from the oven, leaving them on the table to let them cool down a little bit. The setting sun shone through the window, and when the rays hit the cookies, the tine blue crystals that the granny added reflected the light, making the cookies look magical. The colour looked extremely similar to that of his lightsabre and the crystal within it. “Is that-” he began, but the granny put a finger on his lip and shushed him, while grinning. “Try one!” she urged him and he took one. His suspicions were confirmed the moment he took a bite and felt bits of mana surge through him.
