Arthurias

With all their effort, the royals and nobles tried to protect Mercurius from being taken over. When Grimoire Heart had entered Crocus, it seemed as if they had re-adjusted their priorities and sent most of their experienced guards to protect the castle. The citizens were cast away as fodder to exhaust Grimoire Heart's forces before they would reach Mercurius, but they did not take into account that Grimoire Heart had no quarrel with the folks living in the capital. To be more precise, many helped Grimoire Heart breach the walls and navigate through the streets by painting the Grimoire symbol on their doors.

With a smile on his face, Arthurias continued walking through the halls of Mercurius with Icarus on his right side and Theseus on his left. Finally, they had reached the last piece of Mercurius that was not theirs yet. Large majestic doors with illuminating runic symbols on them could be seen from a distance. The three halted briefly and took a moment to take a deep breath. They assumed the worst; a regiment of the finest mages serving Zantedeschia ready to attack whoever broke the seals and entered the grand throne room.

Arthurias' expression, which had become resigned upon reaching these doors, changed when he looked to his left and right. Both Icarus and Theseus had confident smiles on their faces as they gazed into Arthurias' eyes. They were ready for whatever was about to happen next. The two placed their hands on Arthurias' shoulder and tightened their grip, pressing their fingers into his shoulders to remind him of their lasting camaraderie, which got them all the way here. They reinforced Arthurias' confidence in himself, turning his stoic expression into a genuine smile.

Arthurias let out a deep sigh out of relief and happiness. He carried the faith of countless citizens on his shoulders to succeed right now, but besides that, he carried the faith of the two most important people to him left in the world.

Theseus let go of Arthurias' shoulder and approached the gargantuan thirty meter tall doors in front of them. He placed his left hand on the door and looked back one more to confirm what they were about to do next with Arthurias and Icarus. Suddenly, a large sonic boom blasted through the halls of Mercurius. The runic symbols began to act strangely and started to flicker rapidly. Theseus had blasted a large portion of his mana through the palm of his hand to negate the enchantment on the doors.

As Theseus pulled his hand back, the doors blasted open outwards. Meanwhile, Arthurias and Icarus had already positioned themselves next to Theseus once again with Arthurias in the middle. As expected, the grand throne room was filled with many knights ready to give up their lives for the king and take down Arthurias while doing so. The room was enormous. At the end of it, Zantedeschia could be seen sitting on his throne. He clenched his fists as he stared towards Arthurias, Icarus, and Theseus.

"So it was true, you were alive. I'm sorry, let me wrap up unfinished business once and for all, nephew."

The numerous knights on both sides of the room began their assault on the trio and unleashed powerful spells while trying to get close with whatever weapons they were wielding. Arthurias continued walking towards the throne as Icarus and Theseus guarded both his flanks. The two shifted their position from left to right depending on whether they had to deal with magical or physical barrages.

Blood began to stain the marble floors as devastating blows were exchanged between both parties. A large sword swung downwards to cleave Icarus as another knight attempted to pierce right through his ribcage from his right side. Icarus quickly reacted by using Damocles to block the piercing strike causing his cloak to fall off his shoulders. A mechanical arm could suddenly be seen where his left arm was once attached. Icarus raised his left arm and grabbed the overly large sword aimed at this head. The swing was powerful enough to cause him to squat as he got pressured down.

The prosthetic was not a common one though. It was made by a Grimoire scientist from Talaz Lagar. By using the technology from his birthplace, he managed to transmute a powerful item into the prosthetic arm while retaining its magical enchantments. Suddenly, a scarlet light illuminated from Icarus' prosthetic hand as he kept holding onto the sword. The metal of the sword started to bubble and expand as it lost its shape. Its wielder lost all pressure he had on Icarus and was rendered defenseless. With a quick swing using almost surgical precision, Icarus side-stepped and pulled back Damocles while cutting down both assailants.

Zantedeschia saw his most loyal followers fall one by one in front of his eyes. He stood up from his throne and looked around while feeling powerless in that moment. Arthurias had not flinched a moment during this entire scenario and kept on walking towards the king. With only a few meters between the two of them, Zantedeschia pulled out a gun. It was probably one of the most powerful guns in the country, even capable of taking down a dragon with a single well aimed shot. Without any hesitation, Zantedeschia aimed it at his nephew's heart. Still, Arthurias kept walking towards him. With trembling fingers, Zantedeschia pulled the trigger and shot Arthurias right through his heart.

BANG!

A loud bang echoed through the room causing everyone inside to fall silent for a moment and turn their attention towards Zantedeschia and Arthurias. All that could be seen from their perspective was Arthurias' back and the king standing a few meters higher aiming his gun at his nephew. The following seconds felt like an entirety to everyone in that room. Zantedeschia suddenly felt an aching pain in his chest and looked down only to see his royal garments slowly turning red. With a hole in his chest, he fell and rolled down from the steps going up to the throne. Its steps were covered by his blood with his lifeless body at the bottom of it.

The knights in the room lost all their reason to continue the battle and stared at Arthurias' back in awe of what had just happened and tried to process it all. Arthurias started to walk again and stepped on the corpse of his uncle as he walked up the steps towards the throne. His feet were covered in his blood and left behind a trail of bloody footsteps. He paused briefly as he stood in front of the throne and examined it. This seat was the reason his parents were murdered. Now, he had made it his own. He turned around and looked at everyone still present in the room while sitting down.

"Bow down to your new emperor."

Arthurias' voice echoed with such vigor that it caused the hearts of all the knights who served the king loyally to drop their weapons. Without asking any further questions, they knelt and looked at Arthurias without averting their gaze to one another. No one dared to do anything from that moment onwards. Not one of them acted against the order. Icarus and Theseus wiped the blood off their faces and smiled as they walked towards Arthurias to position themselves next to him. As always, Icarus stood on Arthurias's right side as his sword, and Theseus on his left side, as his shield. The captain of the knights chanted a cheer welcoming the new emperor, causing everyone to follow.

ALL

HAIL

ARTHURIAS!
