Alisa

Alisa was having a decent run here. Inbetween waking up and eating lunch, she'd tackled a B-rank mission which she still wondered if the rank shouldn't have been higher... After a long time pondering whether if it shouldn't have been lower. Guess messing with the law for no reason can easily confuse even the smartest of people. Then she had to watch over grandma, which proved a far more pleasant and relaxing job. After lunch, she could only really find one little bit of work to do, but it wasn't particularly troublesome... All she needed was to keep a certain person away from a critical location, also easily accomplished simply by leading him around the city of Orchidia.

In the meantime, the sun carried on its way down the horizon, providing a somewhat accurate measure of how much time she was taking on each and every mission. Yet her work was far from over. At this time of the year, there were plenty of jobs a travelling mage like her could only fulfil at night, and once of her employers in particular had a wide selection of those, just about any that she could think of. Indeed, her next job also involved looking for Dex miller, who once again had her meet him in his smoke filled office, just as last rays on sunset pierced through the half open shutters... Visible even through a cloud of smog thick enough to make her cough repeatedly, in a rather diselegant announcement of her presence. Not that she liked to announce herself such, but she didn't really have a choice in the matter.

Seriously, would it kill him to open the goddamn windows for a while? It doesn't even have to be a long while, just... Ugh... He was perfectly content simply stirring the rocks in his whiskey in between puff of smoke, before starting into yet another monologue, explaining this job in the process:

"Something haunts the night in Orchidia. Even I don't know what it is, and I don't know what scares me the most... The thing itself, or my not knowing. But It knows people fear it... And fear keeps it safe... But not for much longer. Tonight, I'll solve this case."

If nothing else, Alisa could sense a true, genuine hint of fright in his voice, something she didn't really feel last time when the guy was basically ordering her to fake a bloody massacre scene and catch the Rune Knight's attention. This guy may be insane, but she didn't really deem him a complete idiot... And she wondered just how much what he'd seen had to do with what she'd been seeing in Hargeon as the Halloween season neared them.

She'd find out soon, it appeared.

But first, before the sun set completely, Alisa had to find Lumen and bring them along with her, realizing how important it would be to get a light here. She had him ride on her shoulder, as he so often did, providing a light wherever they went, especially reliable as she stepped off the beaten path, towards the mist shaded river.

Dex already awaited her there, holding a flashlight in one hand and a mostly burnt cigarette in the other, using it to light up a new one before finally leading his temporary assistant towards where he had last sighted this mysterious apparition. Soon enough, both of them gasped in near unison as a ghostly light manifested itself before them, right above the river. Unlike the mostly human shaped specters she'd been dealing so far, this looked closer to ancient descriptions of a will 'o' the wisp:

"That ball... Is it the key to solving this mystery... Or the evil responsible for it to being with...?", rambled Dex as absently as ever, yet one look at him betrayed a genuine, frightened shiver as he approached behind Alisa, and at some point she couldn't help but feel how much he actually relied on his monologues to keep his composure. Enough that she didn't bother him about them, "As beautiful as it is dangerous... As we stand at the threshold of unravelling this enigma, I can't help but feel on edge, more with every step I take... But I cannot turn back, not when the truth awaits me."

Her nose twitch as a stronger breeze blew one of his puffs of smoke directly into her face, making her wave her hand over her face. If she wasn't so concentrated, she might have said something about it... But right now, she just wanted to get this over with as fast as she possibly could. Her instincts all but begged her to touch the thing, yet her wariness wasn't so easily overcome, she was hardly the kind of person who would randomly touch a mysterious object she couldn't quite understand. Something told her she didn't really have an option here, not if she wanted to solve this mystery. At least both Alisa and her employer could agree on that part.

Gulping, she stretched her hand forward, steeling her nerves before touching the bright blue ball. It felt surprisingly pleasant, almost warm and fuzzy to the touch. A strange sight flowed directly into her mind, almost as if she was looking at life through the eyes of another. But she barely had the luxury of thinking about it: She found herself unceremoniously flung backwards, but fortunately, all she hit her head on was soft, simple grass. She got up dizzy and thoroughly stunned, but not enough she couldn't stand on two feet and pick up her injured partner.

Her ears rang from the mighty concussive blast, and shaking her head clear of it revealed an unconscious Dex, who had taken the blast far worse than she did. He looked alrught though, as did Lumen, which meant Alisa simply had to carry him over her shoulder like a big, burly man might, and carry him to the doctor. She didn't have to walk far until a good samaritan came to help her carry him in her stead, offering to tend to him and pass along the story, allowing Alisa to go home and rest.

But as she returned to the inn, a surprising sight awaited her...

Huh...?

Another small briefcase full of jewels awaited her, complete with a note from Dex, the wannabe detective. Now that's actually impressive, the guy got knocked out in the process of investigating the case, and still he managed to pay her? No, Alisa knew that to be impossible, the only way he could have pulled this off was if he genuinely believed Alisa would help him crack it the moment he met up with her. And in that case, she had to give credit where credit was due.
